When Spring Comes, by Kevin Henkes

Song
– The Leaves On the Trees

The leaves on the trees they sway in the breeze
They sway all around, all around
Slowly first then faster
Until all the leaves fall down

Activities –
  • Observational Drawing –
You will need paper, a clipboard or surface for drawing, and some crayons or colored pencils.  Go outside and look at some trees.  What colors do you see?  What is the shape of the tree’s trunk?  Can you see the branches?  Are there any leaves?  Sit down and draw what you see.  Are you drawing one tree or many?  What else is in your drawing?  Sit with a grownup and describe your drawing.  Ask your grownup to write your words or write them yourself the way that you write.
  • Counting Petals –
Find a flower in your yard.  How many petals does it have?  Write down that number or remember it.  Find another flower that is the same type of flower.  Count the petals.  Does it have the same number of petals?  Write down your observation.  Try it with a third flower and a fourth.  Want to extend your learning?  Find a different type of flower and see if it has the same number of petals, more, or fewer.  Repeat your counting with several more flowers to gather more data and be sure.
  • Small World Spring Time –
Create a small world using items you find outside and around your house.  Include some people and animals if you would like.  Help the people and animals enjoy a day out in Spring time!
Learning –
Fine motor, math skills, creativity, scientific inquiry, literacy, observation, imagination
