A kibbutz is a type of settlement which is unique to Israel. A collective community, traditionally based on agriculture, the first kibbutz was called Deganya and was founded by pioneers in 1910. Today, there are over 270 kibbutzim in Israel and they have diversified greatly since their agricultural beginnings with many now privatized.

ACTIVITIES

• Fly to Israel –

Put some chairs together and make an airplane to travel to Israel.  Bring along a book and a snack - it takes a long time to get there.  How will you pass the time on the plane?  Will you be the captain and make announcements?  Will you be the flight attendant and help the other passengers?  (Other passengers can be your family or stuffed animals.)  What else do you need?  Can you make tickets for everyone?  Give one ticket to each person or stuffed animal on your plane.  Read everyone your book for entertainment.

• Make Orange Juice –

Get a bunch of oranges, a juicer if you have one, and squeeze the juice into a bowl.  If you roll the orange first, it should be easier to squeeze it.  Pour the juice into a cup and enjoy!

• Open a shoe store to sell the shoes you are making on your kibbutz.  Gather shoes from around the house and put them in pairs.  How can you sort them?  Maybe by color or size – how else?
