Haifa is Israel’s third largest city, beautifully set on the slopes of Mount Carmel facing the Mediterranean Sea, likened by some as ‘Israel’s San Francisco’.  The city is also known across Israel for its mixed population of Jews and Arabs who peacefully coexist and the result is some amazing fusions of Arabic and Jewish cultures across the city.

ACTIVITIES

• Ice Archeology –

Freeze some plastic figures or small items you have around the house into an ice block.  Place the frozen ice block on a try and think about ways you can help it melt.  What did you come up with?  Want to speed up the process?  Add a tablespoon of salt at a time and use an old tooth brush to try and free the figures inside.

• Train – Carmelit 

Haifa is home to Israel’s only subway and one of the shortest subways in the world.  Have you ever been on an underground train?  Can you make one out of a box or put a few chairs together to make your subway?  How can you decorate your train car?  Where will you go?  Make a map for your train.  Want more?  Make a schedule to let people know what time the train arrives at each of your stops.

• Baha’i Gardens – Create the garden from loose parts found in nature 

The Baha’i Gardens in Haifa is one of the most beautiful landmarks in the city.  Can you create a beautiful garden from loose parts you found outside?  What are you using to create the green area?  What colors are you using?  Are you creating from the picture or do you have an idea for another garden?
