The Dead Sea, known in Hebrew as Yam Ha-Melakh (the Sea of Salt) is the lowest point on earth and is surrounded by the Negev Desert. The shores of the Dead Sea are the lowest point on the surface of the earth, and the saline water of the lake give lead to the name because no fish can survive in the salty waters. The other result of the salty water is their renowned health and healing properties and the unique feature that one can float naturally in them.

ACTIVITIES

• Sink or Float using an egg 

Get a container and fill it partway with water.  Gently put a raw egg into the water.  Does it sink or float?  Add salt a scoop at a time stirring to dissolve the salt.  What happens?  Be sure to record how many scoops you put in the water using this chart.  How many scoops does it take to make the egg float?

• Spa time –

Paint your nails with a small paint brush and water.  Paint someone else’s nails.  When you are done, gently rub some lotion into each of their hands to complete the treatment.  Take your time rubbing the lotion in and make sure you get the whole hand.  Take turns giving manicures.

• Drawing in Salt – put a thin layer of salt onto a contained tray or container and make shapes using your finger, a paint brush, pencil eraser, etc.  What shapes can you make?  Can you draw letters?
