The Carrot Seed, by Ruth Krauss

Song – Spring Song (to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell”)
The sun is shining bright
The sun is shining bright
I lift my face to feel the warmth
The sun is shining bright

The rain is falling down
The rain is falling down

I hear patter of the drops
The rain is falling down

The flowers start to bloom
The flowers start to bloom
The colors form the rainbow as
The flowers start to bloom

Activities –
  • Plant some seeds in a plastic bag
You will need some seeds (grass seeds grow quickly), a paper towel, and some water.  Moisten the paper towel with water – a spray bottle is great for fine motor, but you can also get a bowl of water and a spoon and spoon water onto the paper towel.  Put the paper towel and a few seeds into a plastic bag.  Write the date on the bag.  Tape it to a window and observe it for the next few days/weeks.  What do you think will happen?  Draw and discuss any observations.
  • Orange and Green Hunt
Look at a carrot or a picture of a carrot.  Walk around your house and collect things that match the colors you see.  Can you put them together to make carrots?  What other colors can carrots be?  Can you find anything in your house that matches those colors?

  • Plant a pretend carrot garden –
If you can go outside and play in the dirt, go for it!  Otherwise, use a pretend (or real) shovel and “dig a hole”.  What else do you need to do?  What does your carrot seed need to grow?  Can you harvest the plant yet?  Is it growing slowly like in the book?  Oh no!  A pretend bunny has come along and wants to eat your carrots!  What will you do?  Once you harvest the carrots, what will you do with them?
Learning –
Gross motor, literacy, creativity, scientific thinking, conflict resolution
